Scotland’s experts on farmer co-ops and food industry collaboration, we work with food and farming businesses to make them more profitable, competitive, and sustainable - #workingtogether to shape the future, today.
All our work helps facilitate farmers and food and drink businesses to work together effectively. Over the years we've expanded and developed subsidiary businesses - getting the right people together and making innovative advancements - to help benefit food, farming and rural Scotland.
Developing staff capability is one of the most effective ways to improve a co-op’s performance. Check out our events and training programme - most of which are open to non co-op members too.
As a development organisation, owned by our members, we provide a range of specialist services not available elsewhere, to assist them in developing their people and their businesses. Get in touch to find out how we can help you.

Co-operation helps farmers and crofters by allowing them to share risk, reduce their costs, increase resilience, share learning and experience, and benefit from economies of scale in terms of sales and purchasing, helping manage uncompetitive markets by boosting their negotiating power. This can improve the profitability, efficiency, and resilience of their farmer and crofter members’ businesses, as well as providing knock-on economic advantages for Scottish agriculture, and the public benefits that follow from communities working together – enabling rural communities to thrive.
These advantages and benefits are not guaranteed however and, like any type of business, co-ops face difficulties. They can be set up in challenging circumstances and are run and governed with varying levels of competence. We at SAOS want to maximise the benefits of co-operation by supporting the set-up and effective running of co-operative businesses. We want government support to realise the benefits of a diverse and resilient agricultural sector through co-operation.
We would like to see a programme that:
We believe policy programme development can achieve this, supporting co-operatives, and other collaborative business models through:
